“Into The Woods” comes to Littleton

Upstage Players includes full 14-piece orchestra in their latest performance.

upstage players performance rehearsalThe Upstage Players invites audiences to Into the Woods, presented at the Littleton Opera House on May 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, & 27.  Into the Woods is the well-known and much-loved musical that mixes fairy tale stories together with a creative twist. This show is the ideal night out with the family (PG), a great date night, or an exciting solo adventure. In addition, it is a perfect way to support local arts. The Opera House will host fairy tale trees & towers stretching to the ceiling, stilt walkers, and a very talented cast with this newest theatrical performance.

Stories within the story

The Tony Award winning musical features a book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim is one of the most famous and renowned musical composers in the last 60 years in musical theatre.  His works have haunting melodies and intricate themes tying stories together. His arrangement’s conversational style has become a staple of modern musical theatre.

While the main characters come from classic fairy tales Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack & the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood, this telling mixes their stories with a more original piece about a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family.  While we are accustomed to everyone finding their hearts’ desires at the end of a Fairy tale, Into the Woods explores just what happens … after … happily ever after.  Is life perfect after your wishes come true or are there consequences to getting the things you want? Careful what you wish for.

Orchestration and Effects

The Upstage Players performance of Into the Woods will include a 14 piece orchestra

Upstage is excited to bring as fully a realized production as possible to Littleton and the surrounding communities.  The settings and costumes paint a perfect fairy tale world. A world complete with a giant tower and trees stretching out into the Opera House. In addition, fourteen regional musicians will come together to form a full orchestra. The group was put together for the purpose of meeting the requirements called for by the Broadway production’s specification. Additionally, special effects are being created by cast members on stilts and a special cow puppet. The cow is from the latest Broadway revival. It will be joining us in the North Country, along with some additional surprises.  All of this on top of an amazing story, with fabulous music and a talented cast. Consequently, this may be one of the most in depth productions the Opera House has seen in recent years.
